Online Activity- GI Disease Comparison & Contrast
I researched gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) on MedicineNet.com and on Web MD.com. Both had information on nutrition education that was mostly similar but there were some differences. Both web sites stated that chocolate, peppermint, alcohol, caffeine, fatty and spicy foods should be avoided because these have a tendency to “promote reflux” according to Medicinenet and “weaken the LES” according to Web MD. Medicinenet stated that “citrus juices, carbonated beverages and tomato juices…should be avoided” whereas Web MD stated that “citrus fruits and juices and tomato products” should be avoided. Web MD also stated that peppers should be avoided but MedicineNet mentioned spicy foods. In addition MedicineNet talks about the possible of chewing gum to relieve symptoms because it is thought that gum “neutralizes acid in the esophagus” but Web MD makes no mention of this. Web MD does talk about how being overweight can worsen symptoms but MedicineNet does not mention this in their diet section. Also Web MD recommends that meals should not be eaten 2-3 hours before bedtime and MedicineNet just recommends eating “earlier evening meals.”
These two web sites were more similar than dissimilar but there were small differences. MedicineNet contained more fundamental data but Web MD contained more specific recommendations. I found Web MD easier to read and navigate through and the data within both sites was accurate though there were some differences with the data they provided. I would recommend that patients research 2-3 different medical information sites that are recommended by their health care provider and carefully compare and contrast data in all of them to be more accurately and fully informed.
